How to refill the refill the HP 40 black ink cartridge

Learn how to refill your HP 40 black ink cartridges by following the simple, five-step tutorial we’ve created for you in this post.

The HP 40 black ink cartridge was made during the HP golden ages: it has very high printing quality and usually doesn’t cause any trouble for long periods of time. It also yields approximately 400 pages, but you can get almost the same amount of pages from it after it’s been refilled.

This cartridge works with pigmented ink, but you could also use dyed inks in it. However, the pigmented ink will guarantee the best print quality and durability, as also happens with laserjet printers. Please click here to learn the differences between dyed and pigmented inks.

These ink cartridges are refilled using the same procedure that’s applied on HP 15, 40, 45 and 50 ink cartridges. The HP 40 black ink cartridge is compatible with the following printer models: HP deskjet 1200; HP designjet 230, 250, 330, 350, 430, 450, 455, 488 and 650; and HP Copyjet and Copyjet M. Refilling these ink cartridges is very simple, but you must be very careful and try to keep the syringe straight at all times to avoid piercing the bag inside the cartridge.

The interior of this ink cartridge is usually well kept, since they have paper sacks inside it that act as ink container. They don’t have any sponges inside them, so there’s no chance of damaging them. However, if you leave the ink cartridge empty for a long time, you may harm it and shorten its worklife. If you’ve already done this, please read the following post to learn how to clean your ink cartridges and how to unclog them at home.

You will only need a few tools to refill this cartridge, which are: a syringe, ink, a piece of black cloth and a flat surface you can clean easily.

Refill procedure for the HP 40 black ink cartridges:

First of all, place the ink cartridge facing upwards on the piece of cloth we mentioned before, and over the flat, cleanable surface. This can help you avoid causing a mess.

Step #1:
Place the HP 40 black ink cartridge with the print head facing upwards, just as depicted in the following picture. If you wish to learn more about ink cartridges and print head, please visit the following post.

If you look at the bottom of the cartridge, you will be able to see a black piece of plastic, which seals it and keeps you from seeing the small iron ball located inside the cartridge. This is the exact place where we’ll refill the ink cartridge. Please take a look at the next picture.

We always recommend you remove this lid very carefully to avoid pushing the iron ball to the back of the cartridge. Things could get very difficult for you if you don’t have other plugs to replace this one.

Step #2:
Please pay attention to this particular step. There are two different ways of making way for the ink injection in our HP 40 black cartridges.

One is pushing the iron ball inside the cartridge, and the other is injecting the ink right next to it. If you choose to use the first method, you will need to buy the exact same plug at a printer store to replace the one you just pushed.

If, on the other hand, you do the second one, you will need to be very delicate and use very little strength when injecting the ink; this will keep the iron ball and the silicone around it from harm. Out of these two, we recommend you use the second method, since these plugs are very hard to find.

Step #3:
Depending on the technique you selected in step #2, you will need to inject the ink as slowly and delicately as possible to avoid damaging the cartridge. Please remember to inject only 10ml of ink; do not apply more or less ink. You should only introduce the very tip of the needle inside the ink cartridge to avoid piercing it all the way through.

Step #4:
After you’ve injected the 10ml of ink to your cartridge, please remove the syringe entirely. You must now add another 10ml of air using the same syringe, only this time it’s completely empty.

Introduce the needle once more and add all the air to the cartridge. Once you’ve done this, extract another 10ml of air from the ink cartridge, just to replace all the extra room we created in the cartridge with the original 10ml of ink we injected into it.

Step #5:
If you chose to push the iron ball back inside the cartridge, you must find a way of sealing the ink cartridge. We recommend you use a screw or a plug, specifically the plug we mentioned earlier.

If, on the contrary, you went with the second up, then just make sure there isn’t any ink leaking from the cartridge. Put it upside down, print head facing downwards,  for about two hours to check for ink spills. If the print head is releasing a lot of ink, we recommend you take some more air out of the cartridge. If it’s not releasing as much as it should, add some more air. This information will help you fix any of these cases.

Some other suggestions:
We always recommend you print several test sheets after finishing this procedure just to make sure everything’s working properly. Please click here to learn how to print a test sheet from windows. You may also be interested in learning how to print a test sheet in grayscale.
