Learn how to refill your HP 23 tricolor ink cartridges at home or the office by following our brief, six-step tutorial.
Allegedly, this ink cartridge was made for casual, domestic use, but very few modern ink cartridges can take the 5ml of ink this one can, yielding up to 325 pages in total. This is a fairly large amount when it comes to domestic ink cartridges,
The fact that his ink cartridge isn’t in its prime makes it a bit more expensive than the most modern models, but you can still get good deals and reach the highest print quality standards. This is why we always recommend you keep your old ink cartridges around and well, since they’re the ones that will guarantee the best printing quality.
You will also need to know the appropriate kind of ink for refilling your ink cartridge. If you can’t buy the original, generic ink canon, lexmark and HP use on their cartridges, buy pigmented or dyed ones at your local printer shop. This particular one, however, uses dyed inks. In general, dyed inks can be found much more quickly than pigmented ones.

2. Three (3) syringes, once for each color. Do not use a single syringe for this entire procedure.
3. All the plugs shown in the following picture. If you don’t have them and can’t find them, just use hot silicone instead. Don’t apply thick coats of it, since you want to be able to remove in the future.
First, place the ink cartridge over a bit of black cloth that you don’t mind getting covered in ink. You can also let it rest over a flat, easy-to-clean surface.
Warning: The ink colors that appear on the front of the ink cartridge aren’t the actual colors inside it. Please do not be led astray by them. We will now show you what piece of information we’re talking about.
Step #2:
Remove all the plugs from the ink cartridges; you will be able to find them at the very top of the cartridge. Push them inside the ink cartridge just as we did in the following picture. Don’t worry, this won’t affect the printer’s or the cartridge’s functioning at all. Now please take a look at the following picture.
Step #3:
You can now push the ink cartridge plugs inside them. Remember: never use the colors that appear on the cartridge as an exact reference of where each ink color is located. This is how you should place your ink cartridges on your printer. If you need more help, please don’t hesitate about contacting us.
Step #4:
Please inject all the ink inside your cartridges; you will need to fill each syringe with 5ml of colored ink. We recommend you use a syringe with a relatively long needle, just to push all the ink inside this particularly deep cartridge.
Please remember to scatter the ink all over the cartridge: apply 2ml of ink to the very bottom, and the rest when you’re on your way out. You must apply the ink as slowly and delicately as possible in order for the ink cartridge to get all the ink it needs.
If you see your syringe is filled with air bubbles, do not add the last milliliters of ink to your cartridge.
Step #5:
Finally, seal this ink cartridge. If you refill ink cartridges for a living, you may be able to buy a whole of of these, but you could also use hot silicone if you have another job or just can’t locate them in any printer or computer store. Don’t add a large amount of silicone, since you should be able to remove it in the future for more refilling or other ink cartridge maintenance tasks.
We recommend you repeat this exact same sealing procedure on all HP 23 tricolor ink cartridges, since even the smallest amount of air can cause the ink inside them to dry up.
Step #6:
Finally, let the ink cartridge rest or a few hours until the ink has scattered all over it. Once you’ve set this ink cartridge back in your printer, we recommend you print several test sheets using the printer’s own internal system, and use them to check the cartridges’ print quality.
